For centuries artists have sought ways to reproduce images, and various techniques were invented to do just that. A Survey of British Columbia Printmaking showcases artwork that displays a number of printmaking methods. On display from January 21 until April 30, this exhibit comes to the Langley Centennial Museum from the Burnaby Art Gallery. This exhibition presents a survey of many British Columbia artists who have worked in various printmaking media over the past decades.

Before the advent of photography, making multiples of an illustration required an artist to create an image on a surface that could be inked and stamped onto paper of cloth. The most basic technique of this sort is a woodcut – an image cut into a wooden plank. Woodcuts have been in use in Europe since the 1400s, and are closely related to the invention of the printing press in 1436.

The refinement of printing presses over the following centuries led to the invention of other techniques to provide multiple copies of illustrations. With the evolution of photographic printing methods in the mid-1800s, printmaking as a practical communications tool was phased out. At this point, artists rediscovered several older printmaking methods and used them for their unique aesthetic qualities, beauty, and expressiveness, as well as for their ability to produce multiple images.

In the first half of the 1900s, British Columbia artists turned to various printmaking media to express themselves, but because of the large equipment that was required, artists often had to work at an art school. After World War II, several printmaking societies and workshops were formed to share resources and equipment. Some of these early studios operated as co-operatives and other studios functioned as commercial ventures: Studios of these two types are still in existence, assisting artists in producing their prints.
