Random Acts of Art
April 7 - June 24, 2005

Random Acts of Art is on display April 7th to June 24th in the Langley Centennial Museum’s National Exhibition Centre gallery. This juried art exhibition was organized in partnership with the Langley Arts Council.
The concept of Random Acts of Art honours a long tradition of artistic creativity where the effects of chance and randomness are explored in the belief that greater spontaneity will tap the subconscious and reveal new insights into the human spirit. Twentieth century movements such as Dada, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism all upheld spontaneity as a key objective.
The exhibit theme also plays on the idea of “Random Acts of Kindness(TM)”, which suggests that committing a spontaneous act of kindness will lead to a “synergy” of more compassionate living on a global scale. Random acts of kindness are intended to be anonymous gestures of goodwill, with an emphasis on small acts that are done without hope of reward. Paying the toll of a motorist behind you in line at a toll bridge, leaving a bouquet of flowers on a stranger’s doorstep, or helping someone with their bags at an airport are all examples of “RAK’s”. The key to the Random Act of Kindness is that it is an unplanned gesture that while seemingly random and senseless, ultimately contributes to creating positive change through creating a more caring society.
“Random Acts of Art” celebrates spontaneity and synergy. In a juried show, the creative energies of many artists are brought together into an unanticipated product. The works on display are first created by the artist, then selected by a juror, arranged by a curator, and viewed by an audience. Many people contribute to the creation, selection, display, and perception of the piece. The appeal of a juried show is the surprise: the content of the show is unknown to everyone until it opens. Every show has its own energy that is created from the combination of a variety of artists’ works into a whole that is more than the sum of its parts.
“Random Acts of Kindness” is a trademark of the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation.
