| Artists in communities |
A rich and vibrant arts community can create a more livable community. Artists can serve an important role in enriching community, and supporting citizens to engage with local issues. How can Langley nourish the creation of a community of artists? How can we create connections between artists and the broader community?
The Langley Centennial Museum, in partnership with Simon Fraser University’s Institute for the Humanities, has organized a series of discussion forums to provide local artists and citizens with the opportunity to discuss the role artists can play in broadening understanding of our community, and encouraging community participation in the arts.
Monday, November 1 - Inside/Outside: bridging gallery and community spaces
7:00 pm, Langley Centennial Museum
9135 King Street, Fort Langley
Chilliwack artist Sylvie Roussel-Janssens will show samples and photographs of a selection of her works that bridge gallery and community spaces, including the environmental installation, Walk, recently on display at the Burnaby Art Gallery. Her installations invite community involvement and explore the meanings of community. Her recent installation Journey to the Pacific/Voyage vers le Pacifique, was displayed at the Evergreen Cultural Centre. In addition to the piece itself, which explored the voyage of explorer Alexander Mackenzie across Canada in 1793, she worked with local francophone women to create an installation based on their personal stories and own journeys across the country.
Followed by hands on workshop by Sylvie Roussel-Janssens
Monday, November 15 - Art in the Streets
7:00 pm, Langley Centennial Museum
9135 King Street, Fort Langley
Pre-registration required (limit of 20 participants)
Call 604-888-3922 to reserve a space
The Public Dreams Society is an exciting example of an organization that takes art to the streets! Through their Parade of Lost Souls and Illuminares festivals, they create events involving hundreds of artists and volunteers, where the community itself is an essential part of the performance. The organization’s Artistic Director, Dolly Hopkins will talk about the organization, and the process of creating a community celebration based on artistic expression and community involvement.
Following the presentation, a lantern-making workshop will be offered. Workshop participants are invited to create a beautiful lantern, and perhaps (weather-permitting) join us afterwards for an impromptu parade through the village of Fort Langley.
Monday, December 6 - Art in Public Places
7:00 pm, Langley Centennial Museum
9135 King Street, Fort Langley
The City of Vancouver’s Public Art Program Manager, Bryan Newson, will provide an overview of the City’s Public Art Program. Bryan’s presentation will serve as food for thought for community-based art projects that could be possible in Langley, or other communities. He will also help us see how governments, community groups, and artists can work together to create the support needed for successful public art programs.
Followed by hands on workshop/activity (details TBA)
