Stolen Dreams: Portraits of the World’s Working Children will be on display at the Langley Centennial Museum from April 1 to May 30, and it is sure to make you think. The exhibit will consist of historical Canadian photographs, as well as contemporary worldwide images. In addition, the Museum will house artifacts, displays from international development organizations, a weaving diorama, and artwork in this multi-faceted display. It’s easy for Canadians to forget that we live in a global community where every purchase we make, and every action we take, is connected to people all over the world.
Historically, children have always worked. They helped on farms and in the fields. At home, they looked after younger siblings and helped with chores. In many cultures, a child learned a trade or craft by working alongside an adult.
During the Industrial Revolution, the world of work changed radically. Because of new inventions, machines, and technology, work moved from farms, homes, and small shops to factories and cities. Adult industrial workers were poorly paid, so children were put to work to increase the family’s earnings.
Today, approximately 250 million children around the world get up and go to work instead of school. They work in fields and factories. They risk their lives in brickyards, glass factories, mines, and quarries. Many children work long days and suffer from poor health and injuries. They lose the chance to get an education. They don’t have time to play and have fun.
Author and photographer Dr. David Parker has traveled around the world to document the lives of working children. His photographs and the resulting exhibit provide an honest, compassionate look at child labour.
