Three for Trees July 29 - Sept 29, 2002
Trees always grow in the out of doors, but in July trees will be sprouting inside the Museum! From July 29th to September 29th, the Langley Centennial Museum will be home to acres of trees – artistically rendered ones, that is! This innovative exhibition involves the works of three Fraser Valley artists: painter Gary Haggquist, sculptor Sylvie Roussel-Janssens, and photographer Michelle Vandyk. Representing three different mediums, as well as the three physical aspects of the Fraser Valley – town, farm, and forest – these artists look at the symbolism of trees in our physical, emotional, and spiritual lives. The artists explain that, “Our West Coast culture is a contrast to our abundance of nature, posed as we are between the ancient forests and the new developments, making our lives rich and varied. The desire to better understand our place within this context is one of the most important issues of our time.” This longing to touch the soul of nature and to examine our relationship with it is a central theme of these works. In this show, the public will have a chance to see the work of artists who are not only the product of their physical and social environment, but also actors in a rapidly changing society. This unique exhibit will be on display from July 29th to September 29th at the Langley Centennial Museum, located in the heart of the historic village of Fort Langley, at 9135 King Street.
