100-Mile Harvest: Juried Art from the Fraser Valley Chapter August 20 - December 19 The Langley Centennial Museum is proud to showcase our newest exhibit “100-Mile Harvest: Juried Art from the Fraser Valley Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists” from August 20 until December 19.
Museum Curator Kobi Howard and FCA representative Gwen Murphy have worked closely to present this exhibit. It not only features local juried art, but touches on a relevant issue in today’s media and public consciousness. The exhibition offers a uniquely local and relevant way to learn about, and reflect on, the sustainable movement as proposed in the book 100-Mile Diet by Kitsilano authors Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon, and ties artwork by Fraser Valley artists to the eco-friendly concept of local eating. This artistic exploration of our local bounty will investigate our ability to reduce our environmental impact. The pieces will both reflect and inform ideas about sustainability and green-living while highlighting the importance of our local communities within the wider context of globalization. Those who think 100-mile meals might be repetitive or bland will be astounded by the variety of flavours, textures, and colours that can be found with the changing of the seasons, as shown in the artists’ work. Visitors will have an opportunity to see the award-winning pieces, including Alice Mahon’s “Pie Tonight”, which won first place in the show, and Jolanta McPherson’s “From Grandma’s Kitchen” which won second place. Awards of Excellence were given to Cordine McKenzie for “The Pumpkin Harvest”, Wendy Mould for “Far From the Maddening Crowd”, and Alice Mahon for “Pie Tomorrow”. Visitors have a chance to vote for the People’s Choice Award, so be sure to fill out a ballot while you are here! The People’s Choice Award will be announced mid-exhibit, so watch for results around the end of October. Featuring live painting demonstrations, information about local growers, and more, visitors can learn ways to integrate concepts learned at the exhibit into their every day lives.
