Lanterns exhibit May 7 – August 9, 2009 The Langley Centennial Museum is pleased to announce its first partnership with the Asian-Canadian Special Events Association (ACSEA) for the exhibit, “Lion Dancing in the Light: The Lanterns of LunarFest,” which will be on exhibit at the Museum from May 7th to August 9th.
LunarFest, a festival to celebrate contemporary Asian arts and culture, was celebrated for the first time in Vancouver during the 2009 Lunar New Year events. During this time, these lanterns, created by professional artists from Taiwan, were set up outside of the Vancouver Art Gallery to light up the winter night and welcome the New Year. Now these lanterns can be seen at the Langley Centennial Museum. “We want to celebrate Langley’s cultural diversity and see this as a step in that direction,” said John Robertson, the Museum Services Manager. “Over the summer people in our community will be able to see the kind of cultural display that they would normally have to make a trip to Vancouver for - in their own backyard.” The exhibit is made up of two different series’ of lanterns. The first group are known as the Dancing Lions, and were provided to the ACSEA through a partnership with the Taipei Lantern Festival. This Festival is held in Taiwan every year to showcase the lanterns through a lighting ceremony and to mark the beginning of the Lunar New Year in January or February. The Lion Dance is a ritual to both usher in the Lunar New Year and evict bad spirits. The Dancers traditionally mimic the lion’s movements to a drum beat. The second lantern collection is known as the True North Lanterns, and was created for the ACSEA by a group known as the World Taiwanese Lantern Association. The group’s goal is to pass on lantern making skills and promote international appreciation while encouraging artistic exchanges to advance the art. The True North Lanterns represent all twelve signs of the Asian zodiac competing in winter sport in celebration of Vancouver’s 2010 Winter Olympics. The Langley Centennial Museum is happy to bring art of this kind to our community for the first time.
