Trinity Western University Senior Art Show 2009 April 2 - 25, 2009 The Langley Centennial Museum is pleased to announce its first partnership with Trinity Western University. This pairing has produced the Museum's upcoming exhibit, "Gift Shop: The Trinity Western University Senior Art Show 2009," on display April 2 -25.
The artists represented in Gift Shop make up TWU's 2008/09 senior studio class. This class is comprised of the ten art majors that will be graduating this spring from TWU. As a class they are required to put together a professional art show and are responsible for all aspects of the show's execution, from creating the works, to finding an exhibition space, to publicity and marketing. Over the past four years these students have taken studio art classes in a range of different media as well as art history and theory classes. The art program at TWU provides students with a strong technical basis in traditional media as well as providing room for exploration in various other forms. Trinity Western University's liberal arts curriculum also exposes students to a number of academic disciplines which undoubtedly inform their art-making. Literature, philosophy, social sciences, political studies, theology, natural sciences and history are just a few of the areas that these students study throughout their years at TWU. The interdisciplinary nature of this program engages art students in dialogue with some of the pressing realities and controversial issues of our time. The show Gift Shop represents the diverse interests of the ten artists involved in the show. This diversity is exhibited through both the varied media and thematic concerns reflected in the artworks. The works employ a wide variety of media including illustration, painting, material based work, site specific installation, sculpture and photography. These artists engage in contemporary art-making practices exploring such diverse issues as gender, cultural and hybrid identity, embodiment, spirituality, sacred space, urban development and environmental issues, communication, tradition and human experience. The title Gift Shop reflects the eclectic and varied nature of the show and the artistic “gifts” that the students hope to share with viewers. The title is also an ironic nod to the commercialism of the art world that is both embraced and resisted by artists; an issue that these students will have to face as they step into the art world as artists, designers and teachers.
