These baskets from the Kwantlen First Nation are made from split cedar root. The basket on the right is sewn around a fibre bundle while the one on the left is sewn around a slat. There is much work involved in harvesting and processing cedar roots.
Thin strips of cedar root are required to weave the baskets. Cherry bark is often employed when forming the decorative patterns. Sometimes the bark is dyed using traditional plant materials.
