Design Description

Beaded Necklace Basket

Necklace design; strings are one line of red imbrication; beads are two rows of five black and white sections, alternating in a checkerboard pattern. Each necklace has three sections of beads on the length side, and two in each width side. Each necklace also has, at each basket corner, a small bead series of six sections, alternating black and white. There are eight necklaces top to bottom.

Shape and Use

Burden or "berry basket;" rectangular and deep; flared from bottom to top. One hide handle on each width-side near top. Good condition; no apparent use or disuse.

Coiled bundled; imbricated

Materials

Split cedar root; inner bark of the chokecherry, naturally red, dyed black; bear grass, sun-bleached white, deer hide.

Culture

N'laka'pamux, most likely North Bend or Lower Fraser Canyon.
